WHEN LIFE HAPPENS Part 2: Stroll in, or Barge in?
WHEN LIFE HAPPENS
Part 2: Stroll in, or Barge in?In the previous part, we established the fact that no one can escape change, it will surely come.
What distinguishes individuals is how they respond to change. To delve deeper into this topic,
I’ll like to discuss change under two categories.
I categorize change in two forms, they are:
The change that strolls into our lives.
The change that barges into our lives.
Each of these two forms of change listed above has both the positive and negative change
embedded in them. That is, the change that strolls into our lives can either be positive or negative.
Also, the change that barges into our lives can be a positive change and it can also be a negative
Change. What do I mean by the change that strolls and the change that barges into our lives?
The change that strolls into our lives: These are expected changes, changes that give
signals while journeying into our lives, changes we know will come upon us and we
sometimes prepare for them. Such changes include aging, transitioning from high school
into college, from college into being a graduate, transitioning from being single into being
married, transitioning into being a grandparent etc..
Keeping bad company can lead to a bad lifestyle. Involvement in drugs can lead to drug addiction and drug addiction comes with its own changes which are listed below.
Physical Health
Organ Damage
Infections
Overdose
Mental Health
Mental Illness
Cognitive Decline
Social and Legal Issues
Relationship Strain
Legal Problems
Financial Troubles
Overall Quality of Life
Loss of Employment
Homelessness
Isolation
All the above mentioned examples are just a few of the changes that can stroll into lives. These changes can be a product of a ripple effect. Hence, they’re changes that come in processes, changes that can be predicted. I see them as changes that stroll into our lives.
The change that barges into our lives: These are changes that aren’t expected, they never give signals, they come visiting without receiving an invite, and that’s why I see them as changes that barge into lives. Sometimes, their sudden appearance can significantly alter a person’s life. Remember, this can be a positive change, and it can also be a negative change.
Examples of positive changes that barge into lives are:
Unexpected awards
Unexpected Gifts
Scholarships
Dream job received unexpectedly etc.
Examples of negative changes that barge into lives are:
Loss of job
A break up in relationship
Accident
Loss of a benefactor etc.
What change are you currently facing or have faced? Did it stroll in, or barge in? Life happens to everyone, some changes stroll into lives, some barge into lives, and somehow people encounter both. The question remains; when life happens, what should our response be? How should it be handled?
To be continued.
